Choctaw Casino Durant Poker Room Review

As we ended our Texas poker road trip (we already miss The Lodge!), and started to drive home to Massachusetts, we didn’t get more than a few minutes over the state line into Oklahoma before we said “How about we check out the Choctaw Casino Durant poker room?”. We did not know what to expect on a Thursday afternoon, but figured there were worse places for a quick stop on our way to an overnight stay, and evening tournament, at the Hard Rock Tulsa.

Casino Setting

Choctaw Casino Durant is in southern Oklahoma, just north of the Texas border off Route 75. It is a very quick on-and-off from the highway. Nothing particularly notable sits anywhere near it, however.

Non-Poker Amenities

Choctaw Casino Durant offers a full-service casino with slots, table games, and a racebook. The complex did not look huge from the outside, so we randomly chose one end of the casino to park. Wrong end, as it turns out. The trek back through the casino was lengthy (not Foxwoods lengthy, but not a quick jaunt either) and the poker room was not the easiest to find. The casino itself felt dark and narrow. The ceilings were also fairly low. The place was clean, but did not feel particularly modern. Smoking was allowed in most places in the casino as well (but not the poker room).

Choctaw Durant offers a lot of non-poker/non-gambling options. There is an entertainment venue that gets some pretty big acts (e.g., John Legend had an upcoming night). Choctaw encompasses a small shopping area, an “art walk” in the hotel, an arcade, a bowling alley, and a movie theater.

Food options are plentiful, with about 20 different venues options including two separate food courts – one more mid-range quality and one mostly fast food. Restaurants include a high-end steakhouse, a Guy Fieri spot, a Gilley’s, a noodle bar, a sports bar, and a buffet.

Choctaw sports its own hotel with three distinct “Towers” (Sky, Grand, and Spa) you can choose from, with over 1,000+ rooms in all. Reviews on Hotels.com are generally very strong.

Choctaw Casino Durant Poker Room Comfort

The 30-table poker room at Choctaw Casino Durant, is a long winding walk from one section of the casino to the other if you park at the wrong end! For whatever reason, reorienting yourself when you leave the room was not easy either. A nice perk, for those who like such things, was that there were video poker machines right outside the room.

The room itself is quite comfortable. The poker room is a separate room from the casino floor, and enclosed other than a wide entrance. There was a bit of casino noise in the room, but no smoke wafting in. The room is very nice looking, with high ceilings and good lighting. It is increasingly rare that casinos provide such a large space for their poker rooms and take such care in the design.

The chairs are extremely comfortable and attractive, with excellent padding, wheels, and the ability to height adjust. The tables are clean, with great spacing across the room. Tables feature a padded rail, functioning USB ports, and auto-shufflers, but not drink cups.

The chips, cards, and felts are all clean. Play is nine-handed, but the tables are large enough that everyone has some elbow room.

Poker Room Staff

When I arrived at the Choctaw Casino Durant poker room I was greeted immediately and put on the waitlist. They started a new table shortly, calling seven players. Sadly, only three showed up within five minutes, so there was a wait until we got to five players. After that, the remaining seats filled quickly. Both dealers I had were very fast. The first was fairly quiet and serious, but the second was chattier. No wait staff ever showed up, but it was a slow early Thursday afternoon with only a few active tables in the room.

Players at Choctaw Casino Durant Poker Room

The players at Choctaw Casino Durant poker room on this Thursday afternoon were almost all quite old, some of them well past 80. One gentleman seemed a bit confused when it was his action. Most were serious and quiet, but there were a couple chatting. There were two women at my table of six. Players in general were pretty tight and passive, except for the one guy who was under 50. He was both aggressive and gregarious. He often button straddled, and when he hit the board he tended to bet big.

Tournament Structure

As of this writing, the Choctaw Casino Durant poker room is not offering regular tournaments. However, they are holding a WPT tour event from mid-April through mid-May this year. Choctaw is a fairly regular annual stop for the WPT, so you can always catch that if your timing is right.

Cash Game Activity

On this Thursday early afternoon, the Choctaw Casino Durant poker room was running two active cash tables of $1/$2 NLH and one of $2/$4 limit. From our recent tracking of cash games (see our cash game activity update), Choctaw Casino Durant sees anywhere from 4 to 6 tables of $1/$2 cash on weeknights, which increases to 8 tables on Friday nights and 12 on Saturdays. On most weeknights you’ll see 1-2 tables of $2/$5 which increases to 3 to 4 tables on Friday and Saturday nights. An occasional PLO or $5/$10 NLH game may pop up but not much else in terms of other games.
